It is NIF’s third mission, energy independence, which may become more urgent as mankind races to satisfy its ever-growing need for energy and faces the environmental changes that will be brought on by global-warming. NIF will attempt to advance a new form of green energy based on hydrogen fuel if it can be developed as a viable commercial technology.

MLA worked with Parsons Engineering on developing noise and vibration control in the facility. This included accommodating the Class 10,000 clean room environment, which required massive quantities of air and thus very large handlers. Each of the air handlers, about the size of two semi-trailer trucks, supplied about 100,000 cfm, and was designed by Parsons mechanical engineers, with MLA furnishing the noise and vibration control engineering. The overall noise criterion was an NC-25, about the same as that found in a first-class sound studio. The frequency range extended down to 8 Hz.

In 2001, MLA received a Letter of Commendation from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for its work on the National Ignition Facility.
