Since it was difficult to get widely separated choirs to sing the same music simultaneously, composers solved the problem by writing antiphonal compositions where opposing choirs would sing successive, often contrasting phrases. The Venetian polychoral style gradually evolved into the concertato style and later into the modern concerto grosso.
