We were contacted by Rabbi Dr. Joseph Hurwitz of Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs about a sound system problem. The difficulty they were having was in understanding speech, and also feedback from the existing system. The temple had an unusual configuration with a raised bema and a ceiling that curved up to its highest point at the front of the sanctuary. We did a computer calculation of the coverage of speakers and found a location for the loudspeakers in the upper front corners of the room where directional horns could be located out of sight of the congregation. The room was also divisible by a movable wall and additional speakers were added in the social hall at the rear of the room so the two rooms could be used independently or as a combined space. The project was particularly delightful because Dr. Hurwitz had a keen intelligence and a great sense of humor. |
